What to Expect
Driving Lessons can last either 1 Hour, 90 Minutes, or 2 Hours. It's up to you! They should be enjoyable, so that you look forward to them, rather than dread them, or cancel them.
1 Hour driving lessons would be clearly focused on achieving a specific aim.
For example, if you need to practise roundabouts, then the lesson will focus specifically on the skills required to safely enter and leave roundabouts.
The skills required for roundabouts might include early observation skills, anticipation, use of the gears, etc. Remember, though, that you cannot be expected to perform all of these skills on your own initially. Therefore your instructor must take responsibility, and give you plenty of assistance to begin with, and then gradually reduce the level of instruction until you can perform the task unaided. Also, you will begin on very easy routes, and only progress to more difficult ones when you are ready to succeed.
What if I make a mistake?
Don't Worry. Everybody makes mistakes when they learn to drive. You are always forgiven!! Keep a sense of humour, and try to enjoy your driving. With helpful assistance, and proper encouragement you will soon be successful.
Routes
Routes are chosen very carefully to suit the aims of the lesson. For example, the very first lesson would take place on a nursery road, with virtually no other traffic.
As skills improve, so the routes get more challenging. But you won't be thrown into busy situations until you feel confident that you can happily deal with them (with plenty of help from your instructor).
Before long you will be driving independently on all the roads you can think of!
Your First Driving Lesson
You will need your Provisional Driving Licence. Apply for a Provisional Licence.
The first lesson is an introduction to the Controls. No previous knowledge is required, and learning takes place on a strict need to know basis. That is, you will only be taught what you need to know in order to move off, and stop, safely. Moving off and Stopping will take place in the second half of the lesson.
What if I have already had lessons?
If you have previous experience then the lesson will carry on where you last left off, taking account of how long ago that was, and filling in any gaps in knowledge you may have.
How long will it take to pass my test?
Government statistics suggest an average of 45 hours of instruction, plus 20 hours of further private practice. Use the Calculator.
Many people have passed their test with less practice than this. Many have had more practice. The figure quoted is just the average.
Here are some tips on keeping the cost down:
- Have regular lessons (2hrs per week is a sensible amount) at regular times.
- Turn up on time (being just 6 minutes late is 10% wasted)
- Advance block book (discounts available)
Finally, have a realistic target (from scratch, 6 - 18 months) and take your test when you are ready to pass it. In test fees alone, it will cost roughly £100 to pass first time, £200 to fail once, £600 to fail it 5 times.
How will I know when I am ready for my test?
You will know because you will be able to perform all of the required tasks with nothing but compliments from your instructor.
