Before understanding Roundabouts, you need to understand the difference between emerging at Open Junctions and emerging at Closed Junctions.

Closed Junctions

A closed T-Junction is one where, as you approach the give way lines, you cannot see whether it is safe to proceed. Most T-junctions in cities are closed, because houses, parked cars, and fences, are in the way. It is necessary to proceed in 1st gear at closed junctions.

Open Junctions

An Open T-junction is one where, as you approach, you can make a decision about whether it is safe to continue without stopping. Open junctions are usually flanked by playing fields, or grassy banks. It may be safe to continue in 2nd gear (or even 3rd depending on the angle).
